Social News: Facebook’s New Video Format

At this point it’s clear that Facebook is putting a ton of effort into their video platform. With the launch of Facebook Watch, they have been coming up with new and better ways to perfect their platform. On Friday they wrote a blog called “Best Practices and Updates on Video and Monetization” This blog and the changes that came along with it were a way for Facebook to encourage more content creators to use their platform. They have also been testing out a new video format designed to change the way viewers can watch their video content.

The new video format is called Facebook Premiers and it aims to combine premade video content with the interactive feel of live videos. This comes as a bit of a surprise, since Facebook didn’t like people using pre-recorded content on their live platform, but it seems like Facebook now sees the benefit.

Facebook VP of Product for Video, Fidji Simo, states “People will be able to experience Premieres of videos like movie trailers, new episodes of Facebook Watch shows, or new content from their favorite creators, alongside other fans together in real time — just like watching a Facebook Live video,”

The benefits seem to lie in the community. Facebook has seen a lot of engagement on Live videos because it puts viewers into an active conversation. People can comment many times, they can throw as many reactions as they want at the video, and it’s just a fun, and engaging way to watch your favorite video content. Being able to use that highly engaging method will encourage more people to use Facebook Watch, as well as encourage content creators to post.

Premiers is only available for a test group at the moment, but Facebook has plans to roll it out to a broader group soon.
